Jenny and Old Norse Name?

Postby Shay120 » Tue 09 Feb 2010, 04:17

Is there any evidence that Jenny may be an Old Norse name? I could have sworn that I read a Rune stone with the name mentioned (dating from the 10th-century) in Stockholm. It was on a tour and I read the translation and I remember noting "Jenny" down because I had always assumed it was a much more modern name. However, all my Swedish name books and other reliable name sources say it is an English diminutive of Jane.

It would make sense as an Old Norse name, what with the element of ny meaning "new."

I would be interested to know if anyone else has found an Old Norse correlation.

I could not find any Old Norse name "Jenny" in any of the sources. There are lists of rune stones found in Sweden on the internet with inscriptions and translations, so maybe you will be able to find that stone you saw in Stockholm.
Try this one which is in English:
