Origin and Meaning

Eleonora is a Roman form of the Old Provençal name Aliénor of uncertain etymology. Theories include:

1) From a Germanic name with a first element ali = 'other, foreign' and an uncertain last element [1] [2] [3]

2) From a Germanic name with a first element *al-a = 'to grow, to feed' (see ALA) [4]

3) From an Arabic name meaning 'God is my light' (see also Eliora) [1] [5] [6] [7] [8]

4) Greek ἔλεος (eleos) = 'mercy, compassion' [6]

5) Eleonora has been associated with the name Helene, but a connection is not very certain [1] [3] [5] [8]
