Further Information

Mythology

  • Guðrún Gjúkadóttir was the sister of Gunnarr in the Vǫlsungasaga. She fell in love with Sigurðr, who did not care for her, because he was in love with the valkyrie Brynhildr, to whom he gave the ring Andvarinaut. Guðrún's brother Gunnarr, wished to marry Brynhildr, but this was impossible because Brynhildr, knowing that only Sigurðr could do so, had sworn to marry only the man who could defeat her in a fair fight.
  • Guðrún Ósvífrsdóttir, main protagonist of the Medieval Icelandic Laxdœla saga, which recounts the history of the People of Laxárdalur
