Old Norse Hrímþursar = 'hoar-frost giants'

Theses giants are mentioned in several places in the Old Norse literature (Hávamál, Grímnismál, Skírnismál, Gylfaginning), probably because the ancestor of the giants, Ymir, was created from ice and therefore is a frost-giant as well. It was thought that the forces which could threaten life, such as the giants lived in the cold north and north-east of Scandinavia. [1]
