Origin and Meaning

1) From the Ancient Roman nomen Iulius of obstinately obscure origin, theories include

1a) Latin Iovilius = 'dedicated to the God Jove' [1]
1b) Related to the mythological Julus, son of Aeneas of unknown meaning [2]
1c) Derived from Greek ιουλος (ioulos) = 'downy-bearded' [3]
1d) Attempts to link it with Ilium, the Roman name for Troy, are linguistically untenable [4]

2) The name is sometimes associated with the month 'July' (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish juli = 'July'; the name of the month derives from Julius) [5]

3) In the Nordic countries, the name is sometimes associated with Christmas (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish jul = 'Christmas') [5]
