The English poet Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586) invented the name for his novel 'The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia' [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
One theory is that he intended it to derive from Greek pān = 'all' and Greek méli = 'honey' or pam-mélās = 'all black' [2] [3] [5]
