Origin and Meaning
Finnish Suomi = 'Finland' [1]
There are two main theories concerning the meaning of the country's name:
1) Finnish suomu = 'fish scale'. The name is said to refer to the garments of fish-skin worn in erly times by the Fins. [2]
2) Finnish suomaa = 'marsh land', referring to Finland's many lakes. [2]
