Origin and Meaning

From the 17th century on, Svea has been a female personification of Sweden: Svea-rike = 'empire of the Swedes' [1]

The original inhabitants of Sweden called themselves Suebi . This name probably derives from Old German sweba = 'free'. Another theory is that it derives from geswion = 'kinsman'
