Mythology
- Venus is the name of the Roman goddess of love. The second planet from the sun is so named becaus Venus was the Roman goddess who corresponds to the Greek Aphrodite, the latter being the name given it by Aristotle. The planet was originally wrongly identified by the Greeks as a 'Morning Star' and an 'Evening Star', named respectively Phosphoros = 'light bearer' and Hesperos = 'evening one'. It was Pythagoras who proposed that the two 'stars' were actually one and the same celestial body. The name of the goddess of love is very fitting for the planet that is the brightest in the sky and that has long been regarded as the most beautiful. [1]
