The term bahuvrihi derives from Sanskrit बहुव्रीहि, bahuvrīhi = 'much rice'. Bahuvrihi compounds are combinations of two words describing a third one. In this original case, the word bahuvrihi means 'rich'.

Regarding names, bahuvrihi compounds were made up to describe a person and thus creating a byname, e. g. Þunnhnakki = 'thin neck'
