Greenlandic Mythology

  • K'asape is the main character in the legend about the Norse chief Uunngortoq, depicting a blood feud between the Norse and the Inuit. The Norse kills everyone in the village except two brothers who flee. The Norse chief catches up with one of the brothers and kills him after dismembering his arm with an ax. He holds it up and shouts to the other brother: "I doubt that you, K'asape, ever will forget your younger brother as long as you live?!" The expression qasapi is here a label used as a grave insult and scorn to the fleeing man. K'asape, who thus acquires this as a nick name in the legend, manages to avenge his brother later and kills Uunngortoq. [1]
