Nornar

Nornar (singular form = norn) are women of destiny in Northern mythology. The original meaning of the word is probably related to a verb meaning 'to whisper something to someone' (see also Norna).

Snorri writes: "Under the ash near the spring stands a beautiful hall; three maidens come out of this hall whose names are Urðr, Verðandi, Skuld; these maidens determine the life of men; we call them norns. But there are other norns who come to each child that has been born in order to determine its life, and they are of divine descent; others, however, are descended from the elves and the third kind from dwarfs (...) The good norns from good families grant good lives, but men who encounter misfortune have had their lives determined by malevolent norns".
