Further Information
Greenlandic Mythology
- Malerssorniaĸ loses his sister Ujangmiugaĸ to supernatural beings and attempts to give chase to rescue her by using supernatural dogs to travel. When his family cautions him against this endeavour, he refers to his name: "Atera eqquutittariaqarpara, malersuiguma iluanaassavunga" ('I must fulfill the meaning of my name, thus I will be rewarded when I give chase.'). He finds his sister and brings her home. This saying, and reference to the myth, have often been used in written media in the mid 1900s as an exhortation to strive to accomplish things in life, and may have given rise to naming children in this regard.
