1) Most likely, it was of Germanic origin, possibly connected to the elvish Nibelungen = 'sons of the mist' [1]
2) Later it was altered by association with Greek Neapolis = 'new town', the Greek form of the Italian town of Napoli (English Naples) [1] [2]
3) Sometimes it was associated with the Greek words nape = 'dell' + Greek leon = 'lion'
