Origin and Meaning

The origin of the English name Oliver is uncertain. It was originally a Norman name used in France (Olivier)

  1. Two guesses are that it was a variant form of the Nordic names
  2. Later, it was regarded to have Latin origins, Latin olivarius = 'olive tree', but the original use of the name makes the origins of Olaf or Alfarr more certain.
  3. Oliverus has been used as a Latinisation of
    • Alv and
    • Olve in the Nordic countries in medieval times.
  4. Oliver is also a combination of Ole and Iver.
