Origin and Meaning
The origin of the English name Oliver is uncertain. It was originally a Norman name used in France (Olivier). Theories include:
1) Variant form of ÓlæifR
2) Variant form of Alfarr (or its German cognate Alfihar [1])
3) Later, it was regarded to have Latin origins, Latin olivarius = 'olive tree', but the original use of the name makes theories 1) and 2) more likely
4) Oliverus has been used as a Latinisation of Alv and Olve in the Nordic countries in medieval times
5) New combination of OL and Iver
