Mythology

The name Aino was invented by Elias Lönnrot, the composer of the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Originally, the figur had no name but was called aino tyttö = 'only girl (daughter)' and aino sisko = 'only sister'.

In the Kalevala epic, Aino is the beautiful sister of Joukahainen, who promised that Väinämöinen could marry her, if he saved him from drowning. When Väinämöinen had saved Joukahainen, Aino drowned herself when she saw how old Väinämöinen was.
